Thycotic Secret Server: Exporting Secrets

Secret Server offers a plain text export of the data where administrators that have the Administer Export role permission can perform an export.

Exporting Secrets

  • Go to Tools
  • By default, no folder is selected. If left unselected, all Secrets that the user performing the export has at least View permission to will be exported. The Unlimited Administration Mode can be used if exporting of all active Secrets is desired.
  • The administrative password must be entered as a security measure to verify the permission of the user performing the export. Exports can be configured further with options to Export With Folder Path and Export Child Folders. Export With Folder Path adds the full folder path to the export. Folder paths in the export file provide organisational structure if Secrets need to be imported at a later date.
  • By default, the option to Export Child Folders is selected. While this option is enabled, any export of a specified folder will also export content located in folder beneath the initial selection.
  • Secrets are exported as a comma-separated file (CSV) or as an XML file. The CSV file can be easily handled in Excel or other spreadsheet applications. The file is grouped by Secret template and each cluster of Secrets has a header row that contains the template field names followed by all exported Secrets bases on that template.

The CSV Export Includes:

  • Secrets fields only

The XML Export Includes:

  • Folder (and their permissions)
  • Secret Templates
  • Secrets (and their permissions)
  • The XML export does not include users, groups, launchers, configuration, etc.

What Secrets are Included in the Export?

  • By Default: only the Secrets that the admin user doing the export has permission on.
  • Enable Unlimited Administration Mode to export every Secrets from Secret Server.
  • Files are not included in the export and must be done manually.
